From a community vision to a growing organisation — how HCDI came to be and where we are heading.
HCDI's story began in 2022 in Mbazi Sector, Huye District, when founder-minded members came together with a shared vision of promoting social welfare, healthier communities, environmental protection, and fostering sustainable community development.
HCDI started as a community-driven initiative, responding to challenges affecting communities in health and nutrition, livelihoods, environmental sustainability, and access to knowledge and opportunities.
As our experience grew, we recognised that the challenges facing our communities are interconnected and require integrated solutions. A child's health depends on nutrition, which depends on livelihoods, which depends on the environment.
Through member commitment, community engagement, and local action, HCDI gradually evolved into a structured organisation.
Founder-minded members in Mbazi Sector, Huye District, come together with a shared vision of promoting social welfare, healthier communities, and sustainable development.
HCDI begins community-driven initiatives responding to local challenges in health, nutrition, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability through grassroots engagement.
Recognising that challenges are interconnected, HCDI adopts an integrated approach — combining health, environment, livelihoods, and research into a unified framework.
In June 2025, HCDI becomes formally registered as a national NGO in Rwanda — a significant milestone strengthening our foundation for partnerships, programmes, and wider impact.
When communities are equipped with knowledge, opportunity, and partnership, they can lead sustainable change.
Today, HCDI's programmes and projects are built on four interconnected areas of focus that drive our integrated approach to sustainable community development.
Improving health outcomes through nutrition programmes, disease prevention, maternal and child health, and community-based well-being initiatives.
Conserving biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, promoting climate-smart solutions, and strengthening community resilience to climate change.
Enhancing sustainable livelihoods through entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, skills development, and income-generating opportunities for all.
Generating evidence, promoting innovation, influencing policy, and strengthening community development through research and knowledge sharing.
From a local initiative to a growing development organisation, our journey continues. Be part of the change — as a partner, donor, volunteer, or member.
